Before thinking about expression, likeness or personality, it’s important to understand the structure that sits underneath. In this lesson we go right back to basics, exploring the proportions of the head, the key angles that shape it, and how the underlying structure of the skull informs what we see on the surface. Working step by step, we’ll break the head down into simple, manageable ideas so that the process becomes clearer and less intimidating. You’ll begin to see how small adjustments in angle and proportion can dramatically improve the accuracy of your drawings. This lesson is ideal for complete beginners starting portrait drawing for the first time, as well as more experienced artists who want to revisit the fundamentals and strengthen their understanding. By building these core skills first, you’ll create a solid foundation for the rest of the portrait series and gain the confidence needed to tackle more complex portrait work in the lessons ahead.
