I’ll show you how to set up a strong, engaging still life, thinking carefully about composition and how different shapes, sizes and tones work together. We’ll look at how to avoid drawings that feel flat or accidental, and instead create images with clarity, confidence and visual impact. You’ll learn how the overall shape and feeling of a picture affects the final result — whether it feels calm and balanced or more dynamic and energetic — and how to make deliberate choices that strengthen your drawing. We’ll work through some of the more challenging elements of still life, including labels, bottles, lettering, glass, reflections and groups of objects, as well as taking a gentle, manageable approach to tricky subjects like grapes. The lesson is done entirely in pencil, but we’ll use it in a painterly way, thinking in terms of tone, shape and surface rather than just line. This approach helps your drawings feel more cohesive and accomplished, and prepares you for the move into painting.
