ABOUT
Beginner’s Series: Drawing Basic Forms - Perspective In this lesson, we will look at the fundamentals of perspective and how to use it to create the illusion of depth in your drawings. You will learn about vanishing points, eye level, and horizon lines, and we’ll use photos to observe the horizon in some simple sketches, helping you see how these elements work together to place objects in correct scale and relationship to one another. We will begin with simple sketches, first outside to observe the horizon, then inside to explore eye level. Next, you’ll practice drawing boxes in one-point and two-point perspective, putting the theory into practice. To finish, we will construct a simple still life using the basic forms you’ve already learned—cylinder, sphere, and box—while applying the rules of perspective. By the end of this lesson, you will have a solid foundation in perspective and the confidence to use it in your own drawings. I’ve also included a 20-minute bonus demonstration on using two-point perspective to draw the exterior of a house. This will give you extra practice, showing you how to place a house into a landscape. It’s a really valuable skill that you can add into your landscape drawings and paintings going forward. For this lesson, you’ll need some good quality paper and sketching pencils—you can just use a 2B or 4B, though I also like to use Conté pencils for this type of sketching. You’ll also need a ruler and a decent rubber. You can find links to the materials I use on my Recommended Materials page. Whether you're brand new to drawing or looking to strengthen your fundamentals, this lesson provides the clear, encouraging instruction you need to build skill and confidence from the ground up. This course also makes a thoughtful and creative gift — perfect for a loved one who’s always wanted to learn to draw, or for a student looking to build strong artistic foundations.
